As the world continues to watch the other Oscar in South Africa, one has to wonder why there was deliberation to the possibility of the double amputee being a flight risk. The poor man doesn’t even have legs.
While his being granted bail on the grounds he shot his girlfriend dead, either accidentally or deliberately is a legitimate reason for debate, the flight risk argument just doesn’t fly and neither would Oscar. Imagine how difficult it would be for the man known as “blade runner” to even get through metal detectors at the airport without anyone recognizing him. While there’s no denying the tremendous obstacles Oscar has had to overcome to reach world class status in track and field and that he has been an inspiration to millions, the judge has yet to determine whether this is all a horrible accident or Oscar is in fact a cold blooded murderer. Certainly the flight risk concern is a no brainer and should not even have been up for debate in this devastating death that has shocked the world.
Meanwhile, Reeva Steenkamp’s father has warned that Oscar will have to live with his conscience if he is lying about how he shot his daughter. Barry Steenkamp says: “if he is telling the truth, then maybe I can forgive him one day. If it didn’t happen the way he said it did, he must suffer and he will suffer.”
According to some reports, local police told Steenkamp’s family that Pistorius crushed his girlfriend’s head with a cricket bat before shooting her dead, yet this alarming twist has yet to be confirmed.
Having been granted bail, Pistorius is staying at the home of his uncle Arnold Pistorius, and will be required to check in with police as a condition of his release. The Olympian is also banned from owning guns, drinking or returning to his luxury home where the shooting took place.
With the world watching this Oscar, a flight risk is impossible. Oscar Pistorius is not taking off anytime soon, not even on his blades.
