The White House Fountain went Green for St. Patrick’s day and so did most of New York. Even Outer Space went Irish for a moment. Get outta here! In New York thousands marched along Fifth Avenue on Saturday, and many more kept the party going Sunday with celebrations from Battery Park to the Bronx and beyond. In New York there was one major absence as Cardinal Timothy Dolan continues with his duties in Rome to celebrate the election of Pope Francis. Nonetheless Emeritus Cardinal Egan was on hand to celebrate the Mass at St. Patricks’s Cathedral and watch the parade outside as thousands celebrated Ireland’s patron Saint. Meanwhile, celebrations were also held throughout the US and around the globe. The most unusual celebration however was literally out of this World. Astronaut Chris Hadfield took the celebrations much further than anyone else as he celebrated on the International Space Station. The Canadian astronaut wore a green shirt and a bright green bow tie as he photographed Ireland from outer space.
All the celebrations in New York were peaceful and as always NYPD and FDNY, (many of whom are Irish) kept the streets safe and without incident. A great green weekend was had by all.
