I met Sophia near Union Square on 14th on a beautiful summer day. She had a great look that stood out…let’s hear from her:

AskaNewYorker: You have a terrific summer look. Where are you from?

Sophia : I’m from Sweden.

AskaNewYorker: I love your shoes. Tell me about them.

Sophia: I actually bought them here in New York. I think the brand is “regular shoes”, with a black and white flower on them. The flower is actually, I don’t know the proper word for it in English, but it’s like when you sew something you need it. It would be in a sewing kit to measure something with.

AskaNewYorker: Absolutely. A measuring tape. Cool.

Sophia: That’s it. A measuring tape.

AskaNewYorker: Are you a hat-wearer on a regular basis?

Sophia: Not on a regular basis. But I would love to. It’s not so common for women. I think you have to get used to it. And there’s not so many great hats for women to buy. This is actually a man’s hat which was used for a fashion photo shoot. So this is something I saved from a photo shoot.

AskaNewYorker: What is it that you do for a living?

Sophia: I work as a journalist for Swedish television. I’m a reporter. I’m here in New York temporarily taking some fashion courses at FIT.

AskaNewYorker: Any favorite journalist here in the US who you particularly enjoy?

Sophia: I like a lot of journalists here, especially the ones who write for the New York Times. I think the one who writes for the science section is very good, but most of them are really good too.

AskaNewYorker: Any particular name?

Sophia: I don’t want to mention any one name because I think there are so many who are good.

AskaNewYorker: Great earrings….from a photo shoot as well?

Sophia: They are from Sex and the City. I bought them at a Sex and the City sale that was going on at a store in Nolita.

AskaNewYorker: And the scarf?

Sophia: I bought it in the school yard at FIT.

AskaNewYorker: I have to ask….any tattoos?

Sophia: No, not at all. I’m more of a girly person, no tattoos.

AskaNewYorker: I like your nail polish, it’s an unusual color.

Sophia: I think it’s very cheap. I got it at Duane Reade for one dollar.

AskaNewYorker: And the bag?

Sophia: I bought it in Brighton, England. It’s one-of-a-kind. It’s from a young designer, I bought it about three years ago.

AskaNewYorker: Do you have any advice for young aspiring journalists in New York?

Sophia: I’ve been here for only about six months. I think the most important thing is to try and always gain knowledge because without knowledge, you are unable to do anything, but with it, you are able to do anything and you can do exactly what you want. Be patient, and always go for the thing you want to do.
