Ask a New Yorker: I’m standing in front of Olive’s in Soho, a coffee shop. Mom is sitting to the left. Sister is sitting to the right. And who’s this in the center?

Sandra: My name is Sandra. Hello. The way you’re looking at me makes it seem like I’m dressed up like the court jester.

Ask a New Yorker: No, not at all. I would say you’re dressed as a person with style and confidence. What do you do in New York?

Sandra: I moved here about five years ago, which I think is enough time to make me a New Yorker. I’m a D.J. and there are a lot of job opportunities here. So, after school was done, I ended up moving down here from Toronto.

Ask a New Yorker: Where do you spin?

Sandra: Various places. I have a residency in Brooklyn with a club called Studio B. I also in the lower East side clubs like Marquee, Stereo.

Ask a New Yorker: What kind of music do you play?

Sandra: Very electro, brit pop, indie rock, house spectrums. It depends on the event.

Mom: Sandra is one very unique girl, very intelligent, smart and beautiful. Not just because she is my daughter, and not because I’m just beautiful, but I am the most beautiful in the family. (Laughter)

Sandra: (laughing) All eastern Europeans are narcissist. Truly. And ego maniacs.

Ask a New Yorker: What part of the city do you live in?

Sandra: I live in Riverdale. Westchester, Bronx. A very Brownstone area. I like to go out and I like to work. I’m not a very big party girl personally. I’m not a big drinker. I’m a coffee girl. I’m more of a wine drinker. I like art galleries. I like film premiers.

Ask a New Yorker: Do you have any pets?

Sandra: A turtle. It was a gift from someone and I did not want it. I actually went to the pet store and I asked what’s more difficult to take care of than a turtle? And they said, ‘A coral shell albino snake’…so I was thinking of shipping this snake to Chicago to the person who bought me the turtle which is impossible to take care of.

Ask a New Yorker: A high maintenance turtle?

Sandra: Because apparently they need a certain amount of light and my heart is black. (laughter) Just kidding. I’m a nocturnal creature. I sound like a gothic bitch, sorry. So this thing needs a lot of light and heat.

Ask a New Yorker: O.K. Does this turtle have a name?

Sandra: This girl from Sicily bought it for me. So the turtles name is Mr. Tomascetti.

Ask a New Yorker: Your sister is sitting here quietly.

Sandra: She’s submissive, introverted, abstract thinker.

Ask a New Yorker: So what’s the biggest difference between New York and Toronto?

Sandra: In Toronto everything is very manicured. For instance see that glove across the street…you would never see that on Toronto.
