Ask a New Yorker: What makes you the happiest?
Rosemarie: Gardening and being in the outside and taking care of plants. I love to see them grow.
Ask a New Yorker: Where do you live?
Rosemarie: In Sunnyside, beautiful Sunnyside. I’ve lived here about 50 years.
Ask a New Yorker: Do you have any pets?
Rosemarie: Yes. I have a beautiful 2 and a half year old wired hair Dachshund called Timmy, of all things. He’s my confidant. He is family. He is something that I love and will until my time goes. We two are together as a team.
Ask a New Yorker: So where were you born?
Rosemarie: In Germany, in Bremerhaban.
Ask a New Yorker: What was that like?
Rosemarie: Before the war it was paradise. It was beautiful. But after that, well, we just stayed for a little while since we lost our house, our property. We decided to immigrate to this country and lived in Woodmere, Long Island, where the rest of family was, and then we came into Astoria. And from Astoria we came to Sunnyside.
Ask a NewYorker: Beautiful. Where did you get your t shirt?
Rosemarie: My penguins. I love penguins. I have many of them from being a member of the zoo and the Zoological Garden. I have dozens of them. I support them. So every year I get a different one. I have about 14 different penguin t shirts.
Ask a New Yorker: Do you have a dancing partner?
Rosemarie: Not at my age. I’m 79. I’m not dating. But it doesn’t prevent me from talking to wonderful people like you. I have the sunshine in my life and now I’m living on my memories. I have many of them and their beautiful from the trips I’ve taken in my life time. Now I’m reflecting on that. I do go and take advantage of what is available in New York as far as the operas, symphonies and museums and all the outdoor activities. I have my dog. I have my little car, a white Volkswagen bug with black interior and with a little sunroof which is parked about four blocks from here in a garage. It’s a 1970 model.
Ask a New Yorker: May I take you out for a country drive sometime?
Rosemarie: Well, the oil has to be changed. The electric system has to be looked at. She is not really proper to venture out in. She needs to go into a car hospital for a while. And when she gets out, I’m going to parade right in front of this building. Do you know I raised four dogs, puppies in that car? I chauffeured my mother around who was a nurse. I would say “mom, let’s go ride into the country side”. Did you know that there are beautiful spots in Essex County near New Paltz? And if you venture out a little bit uphill in the Shawung Mountains, there’s a beautiful place up there called Lake Miniwaska.
