Ask a New Yorker: Where are you going?
Rachel: I’m going to Trader Joe’s.
Ask a New Yorker: Good to hear. How many Facebook friends do you have?
Rachel: About 1000. Well between 900 and 1000.
Ask a New Yorker: You are Uberchic.
Rachel: I’m O.K. with that.
Ask a New Yorker: Where are you from?
Rachel: I’m originally from Los Angeles. I moved here two years ago. Now I’m going to school here until I graduate. Then will see what happens after that.
Ask a New Yorker: I love your hairstyle.
Rachel: Thank you. It just keeps getting shorter. I cut it a couple months ago. I’ve got the little blonde highlight thing going on.
Ask a New Yorker: Where are you going to school?
Rachel: I’m going to Parsons for design.
Ask a New Yorker: Do you watch Project Runway?
Rachel: I do. I’m an avid fan of Project Runway.
Ask a New Yorker: Have you seen Tim Gunn around?
Rachel: I have not seen him around, no. I don’t think he works there anymore. It would be cool to run into him for sure.
Ask a New Yorker: Describe your fashion sense, style?
Rachel: I don’t know. It’s really weird. I don’t have one particular style. I kind of switch it up every day. But I definitely always like to be comfortable and I like color. But sometimes I wear all black; depends on my mood I guess.
Ask a New Yorker: Name your top three favorite fashion designers?
Rachel: Marc Jacobs, Alexander McQueen and Betsy Johnson.
Ask a New Yorker: Parsons. That’s a tough school to get in to.
Rachel: I actually applied twice. I got rejected the first time and then got accepted the second time. It’s hard. It’s a difficult school but it’s a fun challenge. I’m majoring in design and management. So it’s more like figuring out how to make an image come together and how to control a person’s eye when they look when they look at an image. How they see it. More about that and then the management aspect is obviously a business and how to manage people.
Ask a New Yorker: I’m sorry – who are you?
Rachel: (Laughs) I don’t know still finding out who I am. I think I’m too young to know who I am. I’m going to be 23 in a couple of months so I’m still just kind of figuring stuff out.
Ask a New Yorker: You and the rest of us. So why are you going to Trader Joe’s?
Rachel: I happen to work there.
Ask a New Yorker: What part of the city do you live in?
Rachel: I live in Bed-Stuy, Brooklyn. I lived there the first year I arrived. Then I went to Bushwick for a year and now I’m back in Bed-Stuy. It’s gritty. You have to be aware of yourself and of others. It’s all about your attitude. If you look scared, if you run away, if you seem intimidated then people are going to pick on you. You’re a target immediately.
Ask a New Yorker: You have an uber-inner strength. You’re definitely preparing yourself for the shark-eat-shark fashion world.
Rachel: Yea, Bed-Stuy is not necessarily the most fashionable place. I walk down the street in this bright orange dress – people looked confused but it’s OK I guess.
Ask a New Yorker: You’re a bright young lady, thank you for your time. You’ve done Ask a New Yorker proud.
Rachel: No problem. I don’t know why you would want to ask anyone other than a New Yorker. So it’s definitely a good idea.
Ask a New Yorker: You’re good, real good. Your parents did a fine job. Any last thoughts?
Rachel: It’s not really about me, but it’s connected to me. Both my parents are in the entertainment business. My Dad is an actor. He’s been in a few shows. Benson, Soap, Sports Night. He’s done some movies. He’s my inspiration.
Ask a New Yorker: Did your father play the part of Benson?
Rachel: He was Benson himself.
Ask a New Yorker: Very cool.
