Ask a New Yorker: What’s up Emily?
Emily: Nothing, I’m just laying out her at Madison Square Park on a nice day off from work. That’s it.
Ask a New Yorker: Where do you work?
Emily: I work for Lem Lem. It’s a fashion design company by Liya, who’s a fashion model, actor and entrepreneur. She started her own line. All her stuff is from Ethiopia. It’s really great. She’s keeping the weaving alive in Ethiopia where she is from. She sells her stuff at Barneys and J Crew, Bergdorf, all the higher end stores. Actually she sells out fast. She’s high in demand right now.
Ask a New Yorker: Weaving?
Emily: All her clothes are hand woven from Ethiopia. The techniques are being kept alive. They’ve been doing that for ages. It’s kind of like their thing. She’s trying to support them and their work.
Ask a New Yorker: Great. So what level sun protection do you use?
Emily: I usually use SPF 50.
Ask a New Yorker: Where is your bathing suit from?
Emily: I think the top is from Victoria Secret. The bottom is from Italy from Benetton.
Ask a New Yorker: Are you from Italy?
Emily: I started in New York City, and I lived on Long Island for most of my life. Then I went to Italy for a year studying fashion design.
Ask a New Yorker: Name a few fashion designers you follow.
Emily: Chloe or Yohji Yamamoto.
Ask a New Yorker: Who’s the happiest person you know?
Emily: I’m pretty happy. My family is pretty happy. Everybody I talk to is happy. I don’t like talking to unhappy people.
Ask a New Yorker: Where do you go to school?
Emily: I go to F.I.T.- Fashion School of Technology. I did a study abroad program for a year in Italy, in Florence. I traveled to Milan and Paris. I just got back last Friday.
Ask a New Yorker: What do you think of the Shake Shack?
Emily: I love the Shake Shack. I’m a very big fan. If I could I’d eat those burgers every single day.
Ask a New Yorker: The line is somewhat ridiculous for a burger?
Emily: It’s a little ridiculous. But if you go on-line you can check out what the line looks like. They have a live video camera feed of the line.
Ask a New Yorker: Have you seen the naked roof top sculptures peering down onto the Shake Shack?
Emily: I think they’re pretty bizarre but its art and expressive. I don’t mind them. I appreciate art. I’m a fan.
Ask a New Yorker: What was the last museum you visited?
Emily. The Louvre in Paris.
Ask a New Yorker: Do you watch Project Runway?
Emily: I enjoy Project Runway. It was funny to watch as a fashion designer to see all the crazy stuff they had to do.
Ask a New Yorker: Interesting ring you’re wearing….
Emily: It’s from my grandpa. He was in the Navy. When he sold his house I was looking through his jewelry. I came across this and I really like chunky gold and jewelry. It’s kind of manly but can work for a woman. I think it’s really cool and unique. Not a lot of girls are wearing it and it has a lot of history to it.
Ask a New Yorker: You’re a two-towel gal?
Emily: The other towel is actually my boyfriend’s. He went to get me a burger. He did the deed. He waited in line for me.
