A few months ago, my friend Carrie told me about the band Fun. and their album, Some Nights. I knew their hit song, “We Are Young” because my crazy spinning teacher Cliff makes us sing along while screaming in our faces to move faster (he’s the best and you should totally take his class). I finally listened to the whole album and was hooked. It’s pretty much the only thing I have listened to since.
Then, a week ago, I was at brunch with my dear friend Danny, and he casually mentioned that he had an extra ticket to see Fun. at Terminal 5. I was in in IN and super excited.
I met Danny and his friend Ryan to pregame. The show was at 10pm and Danny only lived a few blocks away, so we had plenty of time to catch up and have some laughs. Ryan was an absolute doll, and we were all having a blast. We hadn’t even gotten to the the show yet, and it was already a beautiful night.
Eventually we stumbled out of Danny’s apartment and down the street to Terminal 5, laughing, high-fiving, and (I’m sure) singing. We got to the venue, however, and did not see a single person outside. Not the BEST sign, but perhaps everyone was already inside?
Then we saw the sign:
Opener: 8:00pm
Fun.: 9:00pm
Still not the best sign, but hey, maybe we were seeing things? We ran through the doors into the concert hall, and that’s when we saw the sad reality: there were thousands of people dancing and singing, clearly having the best night of their lives. Confetti was shooting out onto the crowd from every corner of the stage. It was the Fun. finale. We literally walked in during their last song. They thanked us for being the most amazing audience they’ve ever had, and they walked off stage. Shit.
Thank god those boys like to milk it, because they came back on for four encore songs. They were really, really good.
Even though we missed nearly missed the band completely, I was with the best company I could have ever asked for and we really had such a fun Fun. time. We laughed all night about what we must have looked like when we ran into the venue, our faces dropping when we realized that we were in fact seeing their “last” song.
So for my birthday this year (August 2nd!), I will be going to Philly to see Fun. play a full set and sing and dance my little butt off. Anyone who wants to join me is welcome. There’s only one rule: if the doors open at 8, we will be there at 8!
