Wondering what that sound is coming from the MOMA? Contributor Kelly Moore checks it out…

Have you heard about the Kraftwerk concerts that have been going on at MoMA for the past several days?  It seems everyone has. They’ve been written up everywhere from the New York Times to Time Out to some small local paper in a village near Duesseldorf, Germany (where the band is from…my German coworker read all about it this weekend). Tickets were nearly impossible to get when they went on sale, and there were a lot of disappointed fans, frustrated at how quickly they sold out.

Like a lot of bands lately, they’re doing a series of shows on consecutive nights, performing one complete album (and then some) each night. A friend of mine was lucky enough to win two tickets to the Sunday night show, and he chose me as his guest! I’m not a huge fan of techno-pop music (I generally like my music with lots of guitar), but I I went along.

I must say, the whole experience was terrific. I found out that MoMA is an awesome place to see a concert, and I hope they have more. They handled the masses of people very well and got everyone their will-call tickets in a most efficient manner (maybe they picked that up from all the Germans fans!). They didn’t even let the press cut the line—they were sent to the back of the line down by Sixth Ave just like everyone else. There were about 450 people in a relatively small space, but it didn’t seem crowded or uncomfortable. The show itself was awesome, one of the best shows I’ve seen. The four band members wore really funky, tight-fitting black bodysuits with glow-in-the-dark grid lines on them.  Behind them there was a constant stream of 3-D footage of all sorts of cool imagery (fahren auf der Autobahn was the best—like we were driving our VW bugs all through a cartoony-looking Deutschland). I was smiling the whole time, as was everyone around me. The people who have tickets for the last two shows are in for a real treat.
