Love the idea of a sweet lounge near midtown but hate the crowds at 230 Fifth? Contributor Emily Sproch may have just the place…
There is a powerful divide at 26th and Broadway. Just north of the intersection lies a dismal strip of wholesale shops that supply the city’s street vendors with their cheap perfume and handbags. It’s a five-block stretch of 70s signage and grime, and the oppressive mood doesn’t lift until Korea Town crops up around 31st. Below 26th Street, on the other hand, lies one of the city’s prettiest vistas: a stretch of Madsion Square green that takes the eye straight to the top of the eternally-glistening (even in the rain!) Flatiron Building.
One would hardly expect to find a laid-back yet distinctly cosmopolitan lounge at this strange crossroads, but Toshi’s Living Room is just that. Situated within the first two floors of the Flatiron Hotel, Toshi’s is a swank, relaxed place to have post-work cocktail or a bite while enjoying live music. With no cover charge, it is easy to slip into Toshi’s and unwind, whether for 40 minutes or 4 hours. The music varies—everything from Jazz to Broadway show tunes to French cafe favorites—and there’s something going on every night of the week. Unlike lounges that are hidden in the cave-like basements of restaurants and nightclubs, Toshi’s Living Room sits at street-level, and with its glass walls and dappled light, it’s practically impossible to resist stopping by.
